The ancient ancestor of the digital calculator and computer, an abacus was long important in commerce. What was first a slab covered with sand to mark with letters, later became a board or frame, marked with lines and moveable counters.
Our abacus resembles the iteration of this calculating instrument that used beads that slid along a series of wires or rods set in a frame to represent the decimal places.
